Wahls-Style Nutrient-Dense Eating (Autoimmune Self-Management Support)
Dr. Terry Wahls's own published nutrient-dense, vegetable-heavy eating pattern, framed strictly as self-management support alongside standard MS/autoimmune care, never as a treatment or a way to reverse disease.
Dr. Terry Wahls, a University of Iowa clinical professor with MS, developed this nutrient-dense diet after her own case and has studied it in small trials (the WAVES trial, which measured self-reported fatigue and quality of life, not disease modification). This is Level One of her published protocol, the least restrictive level.
Why it works▼
Eat 3 cups leafy greens, 3 cups sulfur-rich vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, onions), 3 cups brightly colored fruits/vegetables
The nutrient-density core of the Wahls diet.
Remove gluten, dairy and eggs for the elimination period she recommends
Level One elimination step; reintroduce deliberately.
Prioritize grass-fed meat and fish
Protein and omega-3 intake per her protocol.
Move as your clinician approves
She pairs diet with adapted exercise given her own history; not prescriptive here.
Support sleep and manage stress
General supportive levers.
- People with MS or autoimmune conditions wanting a nutrient-dense eating pattern as support alongside medical care
- Anyone who wants the honest evidence picture on the Wahls diet
- Not a treatment or a substitute for disease-modifying therapy
- A 2020 Cochrane review found no research supporting the efficacy of diet or vitamin supplementation for treating multiple sclerosis
- This is self-management support alongside standard MS/autoimmune care from a neurologist or rheumatologist, never a replacement, and never a way to reverse or cure disease
- Dr. Wahls has disclosed commercial interests in books, a supplement line, and branded diet programs
- Any elimination diet should be done with input from a registered dietitian, especially if you have a history of disordered eating
- Do not stop or change disease-modifying medication based on diet changes; that decision belongs to your neurologist
