Natural Testosterone Optimization

Updated July 8, 2026

Huberman's natural testosterone framework leans on foundations first: sleep, resistance training, and less stress and alcohol. Healthy body composition matters too, and his supplement stack, zinc, tongkat ali and fadogia agrestis, comes second and is unevenly supported; he tracks bloodwork rather than guessing, and this is not testosterone replacement therapy.

What it is

This is Andrew Huberman's framework for supporting natural testosterone. He is explicit that the foundations matter most: sleep, training, body composition, stress and alcohol move testosterone far more than any pill. On top of that he uses a small supplement stack, some of it genuinely contested. He does not present this as testosterone replacement therapy, and he tracks his blood markers rather than guessing.

Why it works
Testosterone responds to inputs you control. Deep sleep is when much of it is produced, resistance training and healthy body fat support it, and chronic stress and alcohol suppress it. Supplements are secondary and uneven in evidence: zinc only helps if you are deficient, tongkat ali has mixed support, and fadogia agrestis has almost no human safety data. The honest version of this protocol leans hard on the foundations and treats the stack with caution.

Foundation

Sleep 7 to 9 hours, consistently

Protect deep sleep; treat snoring/apnea

Much of testosterone is produced during sleep; short or fragmented sleep measurably lowers it. This is the single biggest free lever.

Foundation

Lift heavy, don't over-do endurance

Resistance training most days; compound lifts

Resistance training supports testosterone; chronic excessive endurance and overtraining can lower it. Build strength and recover.

Get body fat into a healthy range

Avoid both excess fat and very low fat

Excess body fat raises conversion of testosterone to estrogen; very low body fat and very low dietary fat also suppress it. Aim for the middle.

Cut alcohol and manage stress

Minimize alcohol; daily stress down-regulation; morning light

Alcohol and chronically high cortisol both suppress testosterone. Morning sunlight, breathwork and stress control help protect it.

If deficient

Zinc and vitamin D

Zinc with food; vitamin D dosed to your blood level

Zinc and vitamin D support normal testosterone, but mainly by correcting a deficiency. Topping up beyond normal will not push levels higher.

Optional

Boron

~2 to 6mg per day

Boron may lower sex-hormone-binding globulin, slightly raising free testosterone. Evidence is modest; treat as optional.

May lower SHBG; modest evidence
Contested

Tongkat Ali

~400mg per day, earlier in the day

A 2022 meta-analysis found tongkat ali raised total testosterone versus placebo, but independent reviewers note the evidence in healthy men is limited. Buy a standardized extract if you try it.

Caution: not sold

Fadogia Agrestis (we don't sell this)

Discussed by Huberman; we do not sell it

Fadogia acts as a luteinizing-hormone mimic, but it has almost no human safety data and animal studies showed testicular toxicity at higher doses. Huberman cycles it and later came off it. We describe it for completeness and deliberately do not sell it; if you consider it, do so only with a doctor.

Support

Creatine

5g per day

Creatine supports training performance and recovery, which indirectly supports the foundations. Modest direct hormonal effect.

Measure

Test your blood, don't guess

Total and free testosterone, estradiol, SHBG, LH

Huberman tracks markers rather than guessing. Driving testosterone up without watching estradiol can backfire. Test before and after any change.

Is this for you?
Good fit if
  • Men who want to support testosterone without TRT
  • People willing to fix sleep, training and body fat first
  • Anyone who wants the honest evidence behind the popular stack
  • Data-minded people who will actually test their blood
Cautions
  • This supports your body's own testosterone; it is not testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). TRT is a medical decision with real trade-offs, including reduced fertility, and is not something we sell or dose.
  • We deliberately do not sell fadogia agrestis. It has minimal human safety data and animal studies showed testicular toxicity at higher doses. If you consider it, do so only under medical supervision.
  • Tongkat ali's evidence in healthy men is limited and contested; treat any testosterone supplement as optional and unproven, not a guarantee.
  • Do not drive testosterone up without monitoring estradiol; rising testosterone can raise estrogen. Test your blood before and after changes.
  • These doses are for adult men and can cause unwanted effects in women, including virilization; women should work with a hormone specialist. Anyone with a hormone-sensitive condition or on medication should consult a physician first.
